The Sheldon Theatre Brass Band was founded in 1989 as the resident performing ensemble at the newly-restored, turn of the century T. B. Sheldon Theatre in Red Wing Minnesota. This thirty-or-so-piece group is based on the traditional British brass band, using cornets, flugel horn, alto horns, baritone horns, euphoniums, trombones, tubas, and percussion. The brass band repertoire includes a heritage of great marches, overtures, classical transcriptions, test pieces, jazz and popular tunes, and a wealth of of music originally written for the Salvation Army. In addition to its regular concert series at the Sheldon Theatre, the band also performs at other regional concert halls, community festivals, parks, colleges, and churches. We have also participated several times in the annual North American Brass Band Association Championships.

Highlights of the band's career include winning the Honors division at the 1993 NABBA contest in Washington, D.C. and being chosen by audition to perform at the 1994 Great American Brass Band Festival in Danville Kentucky. In 1995, the band recorded its first compact disc, Fanfare and Carols. In 1997, the band and the city of Red Wing hosted the NABBA contest, and the band were runners-up in the Championship section. Twice, the band has been chosen to appear at the Minnesota Music Educators Winter Conference, and in October 2000 convention of the Wisconsin Music Educators Association. In the spring of 1999, we presented the world premiere of a work commissioned in honor of our tenth anniversary, Earth Fire Water--Incantation for Band by composer Stephen Bulla. It is included on our second CD, Earth Fire Water, released in 1999. In the spring of 2003, we were runners-up in the Honors division at NABBA. In December 2003, we released our third CD, a collection of concert performances from the previous two years, entitled Live.
